My Life As A Senior Citizen

We are all different. My lifestyle may be completely different then others. There are many things that can affect our lifestyle. Stories about, my life as a senior citizen are included in the list below.

  1. Health: Health issues, chronic conditions, and disabilities can significantly impact a senior’s lifestyle, affecting their mobility, independence, and quality of life.
  2. My health is excellent. During my last visit to the doctor, he said to keep doing what I am always doing. I was diagnosed with cataracts which affected my vision and eventually my license was taken away from me. This was very difficult as I felt I had lost my independence. I had to depend upon others, which I found extremely challenging. I would walk to work (4 miles) because I didn’t want to inconvenience family and friends. They were more then willing to do whatever but I am a stubborn person. Yes, some of them were mad because I didn’t call them. The cataract surgery was a success and I don’t need to wear glasses. This is strange as I had worn glasses for fifty years plus.
  3. Financial Situation: Financial constraints or instability can limit a senior’s ability to afford healthcare, housing, nutritious food, social activities, and other essentials, impacting their overall well-being.
  4. Our story ..We had to quit our jobs in our late fifties because our daughter and husband had twin boys born at 25 weeks and we had to move to another part of the country and live with them to provide care for the twins. One was on oxygen for five years and he needed 24 hour care. We stayed for 7 years and when we returned home we had to find work to supplement our pensions. I am still working at 75 but I have good health and enjoy working.
  5. Social Support: The availability of social support networks, including family, friends, and community resources, can influence a senior’s lifestyle, providing emotional, practical, and social support.
  6. We have two of our children and their families living near us so we do have support.
  7. Access to Healthcare: Access to healthcare services, including preventive care, medical treatments, and rehabilitation, can affect a senior’s ability to manage health conditions and maintain overall health and well-being. Thankfully, both of us have access to a doctor.
  8. Housing and Living Environment: The suitability and accessibility of housing, including safety features, proximity to amenities, and access to transportation, can impact a senior’s ability to age in place comfortably and independently.
  9. We are renting from our daughter and her husband. It is the main floor of a house and the rent is reasonable. They could be charging close to double what we are now paying. We are thankful.
  10. Nutrition and Diet: Access to nutritious food, dietary habits, and nutritional intake can influence a senior’s health, energy levels, and overall well-being.
  11. We try and eat well and do not over indulge, although I do like chocolate.
  12. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity and exercise can have significant benefits for seniors, including improving physical health, mobility, cognitive function, and emotional well-being.
  13. We walk and my job can be physical as I do maintenance at a 15 room motel. This also includes shovelling snow and maintaining motor homes that we rent.
  14. Mental Health: Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and cognitive decline can impact a senior’s lifestyle, affecting their mood, relationships, and ability to participate in activities.
  15. My wife’s sister just passed away with alzheimers. She was diagnosed twenty years ago so it has been a difficult time period but we are well and deal with situations as they arise. Feb 23,1924
  16. Cultural and Personal Preferences: Cultural beliefs, values, traditions, and personal preferences can shape a senior’s lifestyle choices, influencing their social activities, leisure pursuits, and daily routines.
  17. We have a number of friends, whom we are thankful for and we do have a large church family so se aren’t lonely.
  18. Life Transitions and Events: Life transitions such as retirement, loss of a spouse or loved one, relocation, or changes in health status can have profound effects on a senior’s lifestyle, requiring adjustments and adaptations to new circumstances.
  19. I have friends that have lost their spouse and some of them are finding the loss difficult to deal with. One of my friends has been depressed and he is having major health relationship problems because of it. He has been counselled but cannot deal with the loss of his wife.

Considering these factors can help individuals, families, caregivers, and communities support seniors in maintaining a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle as they age.
